A Whirlwind of Change and Seasons

Wow, my last post was in January-- a time where my life was CONSUMED with studying, interning, missing my long distance Carolina boyfriend, and my favorite activity, taking care of my beloved mother.  Hours in the hospital, checking on her during lunch brea
ks and after interning all day, and hours in the evenings at home, helping her with her creams, medicines, IVs, getting her comfortable, her ipad charged, making sure her rice-a-roni was cooked just right-- and most of all, just soaking her all in.

Everything has changed.  We, my family, has experienced deep seasons of sorrow, grief, loss, despair, anger, mistrust, confusion, worry, you name it, one of us have felt it.  My mother joined my grandma Dixie on April 3rd, 2013.  She dictated how the end of her life would be, and that was an incredible thing to witness.  She was in her home, surrounded by all of us, her sister and
mother visited, the pastor visited, she was baptized, her friends sat with her during the days, she was able to get some things in order as she wanted (those cook books NEEDED to be organized as the girls would never use most of them! and it meant a lot to her to download all of her favorite kids songs and make a play list for her future grand children. we listened to that play list on some of her last days).  My mom was in control, but what was most difficult was having to watch her switch her mindset from being in control of her cure and recovery, to being in control of her death and progression to the next life.  And even though it was an honor to watch her be so brave and be by her side, it was the worst thing imaginable to have to watch that transition from recovery mindset to heaven focused mindset.

Something I will thank God for every day is the fact that my mom was with us for a very long time given the gravity of her battle (now on most days, I follow that thanks with a "but yes, you still suck for taking my mom").  My mom almost left us 10 days prior to when she passed away.  We were blessed with TEN days of time in our HOME where she was lucid for most of those days where her schedule was dictated by her, not her medications, not her doctors visits, nothing but her.  I remember one day, specifically, when she was doing SO well we had talked about going back to the hospital just because her strength surprised us after such a low point one saturday, and she expressed such freedom about being in her home.  It was honestly the most reassuring thing she could have said, as I knew then, she was comfortable, content, she was OK.  She was being taken care of by some one MUCH bigger than me.

She demonstrated this by describing what was happening that one saturday we thought we were losing her.  She was talking to me, and I think her friend Kim, too.  She described being able to hear what we were saying to us, and she remembered everything (us reading the bible to her, us singing to her, etc), but not being able to talk or answer.  She said she felt like she was just being pulled away from her body.  I asked if she was scared, and she said no, not at all...I had a completely peaceful feeling all over.  I knew it was going to be okay, she explained.  She didn't like not being able to respond, but she wasn't scared.  What a way for God to show her that he is going to care for her.  Something I told my mom a lot during her last days was that I was praying that God would scoop her ailing body into his strong arms and restore her strength, and erase her pain.  I felt that that prayer was safest as I wished he would do that on earth but I KNEW he would in heaven.

We also told my mom she would have lots of jet ski's to ride in heaven, and even some with stripper poles if so desired (a joke from her days of stripping nightgowns in her sleep).

I miss my mom, achingly so.  But I try so very hard to think of ways to honor her memory each and every day.  Here we are, June 26.  Brittany just had a birthday! we all went to celebrate with her in Carmel, Indiana! Man o Man is she so good at decorating! Christopher and I are living together in Dublin, OH -- no more long distance--EVER.  I graduated with my MSW, passed the clinical exam, and am a Licensed social worker...with a JOB starting after our annual Cumberland trip next week.  Zachary just got back from a 10 day school trip to Spain, it was about a 4-1 girl-guy ratio, I think he had fun...  And dad is loving his Job, and trying to stay busy and active.  Christopher is working for nationwide again, missing Charleston a bit, but I help make up for it I think :)  We are all trying to keep our heads above water.  And the best way us Polen's do that is by getting on a boat--that's where we are headed next week!

Happy New Year--2013!

Never have I been so grateful to leave a year behind me!  I have had a countdown to 2013 since September, and I am so glad to be saying goodbye to 2012 tonight, though I am not saying good-riddens exactly how I had planned.  I have been fighting a silly cold since right after christmas and am not able to visit my mom in the hospital.  My mom and dad will be ringing in the new year together in the hospital, and Zach and I will be ringing it in here at home, that is, if I can stay awake!

2012 has been rough for many reasons; countless health battles for my mother, countless emotional struggles that my family has had to overcome including the death of my my papaw, and simply watching my mom fight so hard every single day.  On top of that I have had long work/school days, my dad has as well making schedules complicated, my sister is likely VERY sick of her car and the drive from MI to IN, and Zach is likely sick of people asking him how he is doing and asking him about his grades.  My boyfriend moved across the country to SC and I miss him all of the time. BUT there have been GREAT things too...

Great 4th of July memories at the boat, great Seabrook memories, an incredible man I have truly fallen in love with, a family that I will forever be grateful for, a brother who is now driving an AWESOME jeep, a mother who has shown me what strength really is, a papaw who left this earth not before showing me what generosity is, a life of endless learning.

I am really hoping for a 2013 that is full of health, prosperity, generosity in this nation, beauty, happy changes, and man and I living in the same zipcode!!!

My 2012 final thoughts is something that has struck me lately, which is how often people tell my momma to keep fighting, or to stay strong, and while I understand that these words are meant in good faith, they are actually quite inconsiderate.  Well I think they are, I haven't had the courage to ask her what she thinks because I would likely cry.  I think they are inconsiderate simply because it takes her strength to wake up, to move her legs from side to side, to move in her bed, when she has to ASK to get up, to take her 20+ pills twice a day, etc etc etc.  The strength she has is more than any of us have, and she already has that strength...AND that strength has nothing to do with the outcome of her illness.  She is fighting, as are the doctors, as is her family, but the outcome of her illness, her prognosis, if you will, should never be a reflection on her; and words like "keep fighting" or "stay strong" implies that she has the option to not do that for one, and two that the result of not doing that would be failure.  I'm sure people may disagree, but I feel that applauding her strength and incredible tenacity would be much more appropriate, I just don't think we as a culture know these things unless you have experienced it personally.

Happy (Day After) Valentine's Day!

I'm always a day late and a dollar short (Yay for using phrases correctly!).  But regardless, I hope you felt and experienced a LOT of love yesterday!

Valentine's Day has lovers and haters...but I feel like I exist somewhere in between.  There is no need for a day to tell your loved one's you love them if you do that on a regular basis...but at the same time, it gives us an excuse to be extra lovey and extra celebratory!

But while you all thought it was Valentine's Day yesterday...it was actually this chicks birthday!  Happy Birthday to a truly amazing woman!  I love our coffee dates, our hang outs, our talks, and your hugs.  You're a great friend...and I am crazy about your life.  Thanks for allowing me to be a part of it :)

And look at this cutie!  It had been way too long, my dear Lisa.  Hope you know how much I enjoy smiling with you, laughing with you, and talking with you.

#151: People love me.  A lot.  And that is an incredible thing.
#152: I love a lot of people.  And I love them passionately.  And want nothing but happiness for them ALL.
#153: Anthony told me I was the best Valentine.  And he tells me he loves me everyday I see him.  When a 7 year old loves you unconditionally...it kinda rocks your world.
#154: Gracious professors and supervisors make being sick a little less miserable.  Hoping for a speedy recovery so I can get back on the bandwagon of working hard.
#155: I'm so glad that I have been blessed with two parents who love eachother lots.
#156: I've been blessed by this one guy a lot lately.  And it's kinda the most magical experience I've had.
#157: My heart is full of gratitude and love.  I feel full with joy and full of smiles.
#158: I love walking across campus and running in to people I know, love and miss.  Yeha....I loved seeing you yesterday!
#159: I have so many more years (decades) before I get to 1000...but I simply am so excited!

iPad Trouble

I love my iPad.  Seriously.  I love it SO much.  I bring it with me everywhere and it's my favorite little accessory.  I can do so many great things on it and it's helpful and oh so versatile.

Problem.  I keep missing people's birthdays because of the facebook app.  You have to go through so many steps to see the lists of birthdays, and I am just too used to seeing them on the sidebar that I am missing birthdays!  (sorry!).

Other problem.  There is no blogger app.  And when I use blogger on my iPad, it always publishes strange.  Bizarre.

Tips for using blogger on iPad?

Regardless, I LOVE IT! BUY ONE!

#21: Technology is both challenging, fabulous, and frustrating.  It's scary to think of how much I rely on it, and how upset I would be if I didn't have access to all of the technological things I use.

(your welcome, apple)
(ps. I know you don't need my help)

And it's Over

Birthdays are weird.  Whereas Christmas is an entire season, Birthdays last but a mere hours, are recognized by so few, and aren't nearly as exciting.  I look forward to them, for the novelty the excitement and the excuse to celebrate, yet I rarely have a plan for how I want to celebrate.

I ended up having a decent experience with my HR appointment, minus the three times I had to pee in a cup...and let me tell you people, I HATE peeing in cups.  I will NEVER understand why they always say "we only need a little" because it's not like I can squeeze out some drops. UGH.

I spent the rest of my day napping, going to dinner, and sleeping. Oh, I also did some more HW.  My parents were incredibly gracious and giving and bought me and iPad for my birthday which has been SO much fun.  I am still learning its limitations/abilities and am having SO much fun playing words with friends.  My back is also thankful to be carrying a much lighter bag now that I don't need to bring my computer to campus!

All in all, turning 22 was definitely uneventful, but pleasant!  I had a bit of a heart attack, though, when I realized that 23 is next...I have always felt like that is the last irresponsible year we get!  (Where did I get that fyi?)

A couple hours in...

So it's my birthday! I feel it best to reflect on the day thus far even though it is only 8:40 because I want to be grateful for the little things...all day long!

When I woke up this morning, I had enough time to take a shower.  But when I saw that my hair still little pretty damn good if I say so myself (I have low standards) I got an extra 33 minutes to stay in my warm comfy heaven (aka my bed).  #grateful

When I picked up the children today, Anthony remembered that it was my birthday and was so excited about it! #grateful

My madre and baby brother were friendly, but not too friendly like annoying morning people in the way they wished me a happy birthday.  My madre did take pictures of me, but that's understandable as I'm actually dressed up because I have an HR meeting.  Rare to find me not in sweats.  #grateful

I have currently encountered the following bday coupons: $15 off at The Limited, two $10 off at Victoria's Secret, a free lunch at Panera, a free dinner at Oak Pointe, and a birthday surprise at Panera as well..whatever that is :) #grateful

I love facebook.  And mostly, facebook birthdays.  It's so cute to receive birthday wishes from all over the world.  I truly love it.  Birthday texts are fabulous too.  #grateful

As I sit at Panera currently, working on both homework and Internship assignments, I am eager to find out my surprise (hoping it's gluten free) and I'm excited about finding out what the rest of the day brings.

Birthday

Hello Blogosphere! How crazy is it that it is already Wednesday evening?  I am exhausted, excited about school, and dreading the fact that tomorrow begins my four days of homework (Have I mentioned that EVERY day is planned perfectly to fit field, classes, work, work, and homework) (ps, sleeping doesn't always fit in).  It feels like it has been forever since it was the weekend, yet at the same time yesterday and today are such a blur!

So this friday marks the end of my 22nd year of life.  Meaning, I turn 22!  (weird, huh?)  It's not a super special birthday.  Seems that after 21 they aren't too exciting.  I have NO plans for my birthday.  And let me just say that I am not someone who has a good track record with birthdays; things like swine flu and car accidents have interfered with past birthdays.  And because my birthday is right after school starts, it has meant in the past that it's kind of awkward to ask brand new friends to hang out to celebrate my birthday...when I have yet to hang out with these people outside of the school setting.  AND a lot of my friends have either moved away or are in weird transition phases, so I simply did not plan anything.  And though I feel lots of things in response to that, I know that it doesn't mean I am any less loved or appreciated by my friends :)

It's just a weird birthday.  I'm not living on campus so going to the bars is more difficult unless there was some where to sleep afterwards, and that isn't always convenient for anyone.  I had thought about emailing people to go to the hot tub gardens, but feel like lots of people are trying not to spend money at the time (including me).  So instead, it will just be a quiet day of HR meetings, homework, and maybe a dinner out with the padres.

I'll be sure to report back about how the day actually goes... I'm a bit worried.  I also think of great things to do well in advance, things that would make the day/wknd super exciting and elaborate but generally feel uncomfortable planning my birthday activities (please spend your money to celebrate me).  But it can't be worse than swine flu of 09 birthday.

Birthday Fizzle

I have a sister.  Her name is Brittany and it is her birthday.  June 22...the second official day of summer!  This past weekend we celebrated her birthday while on the houseboatizzle. (in the izzle mood).  Though we celebrated with gifts we were forbidden to celebrate with decorations, a party, or cake/ice cream.  Why you may ask?  My hermana is hung up on birthdays.  Not *just* about the age...peeps she's only 25...but mostly about the expectations she has yet to live up to; the milestones she thought she would have reached by now but hasn't.

I don't get it.  I don't really have expectations for myself..and even when I do I don't really think about it.  Yeah I wanna save money, I wanna get good grades, find a great job, find a great husband, etc etc.  But there isn't a due date on these things and if I fail...well the sun still comes up tomorrow.

Is this a birth order thing? Or maybe just a personality thing.  All I know is I wish only HAPPINESS for my beautiful sister.  I love her lots...and look up to her in so many ways!

Happy Birthday Brittany!

Fourteenth Birthday

My baby brother turned fourteen today.  It's so weird to think of him as a teenager, and not as a child.  As he gets older I realize that I actually am getting older as well; people often expect me to be in a relationship, expect me to be moved out of my parent's home and expect me to be more mature.  I prefer to stay younger for a bit longer.

I love being close to my family, and I love the memories that I build with them each Christmas.  At dinner this evening we discussed some infamous vacations we've taken.  Of course Lake Cumberland is on the list, but our trips to Saas Fe, Switzerland, Nuremberg, Germany and Disney World were irreplaceable.  As I enjoy being young and depending on my parents for a lot of my support, I do in fact look forward to the day when I can include my future family and cute children on my awesome families vacations.  So few can vacation like the Polen's vacation!
This years tree!

Saas Fe!

Pure beauty...God is real.

Merry Christmas, everyone!!!
